Etymology

A relatively recent folk etymology (not attested before the 20th century in the Historical Irish Corpus 1600–1926[1]) altering synonymous lúidín under the influence of ladhar (“toe, thumb”),[2] but following a variety of similar words dating back to Old Irish lóetanán, laídicán,[3] which are themselves altered derivatives of lútu (“little finger”).[4]
