From kverk (“throat”) +‎ sott (“disease”). May be re-analyzed as an apocopated version of kverka (“to kill, to strangle”) +‎ sott (“disease”), which can be seen in the old Danicized spelling Qværkesot (normalized as kverkesott, also used in Bokmål).
