Etymology

Attested in Karel Thám's Deutsch-böhmisches National-lexikon (1788), in actual usage at least since 1798. A wanderword, either from German Kukuruz, Hungarian kukorica or Slovak kukurica, in turn probably from Serbo-Croatian kukuruz or Romanian cucuruz (see there for further etymology).

The ending of the modern form is probably due to paronymic attraction to common suffix -ice.
