From Old Swedish krønika, krønik, from Middle Low German kröneke ~ kroneke, from Latin chronica, from Ancient Greek χρονικός (khronikós, “relating to time”), derived from χρόνος (khrónos, “time”). Compare Danish and Norwegian krønike.

It is not ruled out that the word was borrowed into Old Saxon early enough to undergo regular umlaut. Compare Old High German cronih (8th century), though this is a hapax without later continuation. Alternatively the form may have developed umlaut because it was confused with the diminutive of unrelated krône (“crown”).
