Etymology 1

From Middle Dutch coghele, either from or related to Middle High German kugele. If the word is inherited throughout Continental West Germanic, it requires a Proto-West Germanic *kugulā. Further origin uncertain. Possibly related with Proto-Germanic *kuggilaz, whence English cudgel (“heavy stick, bat, club”), from Proto-Indo-European *gewgʰ- (“swelling, bow”), from *gew- (“to bow, bend, arch, curve”).[1]

Cognate with German Kugel (“solid ball, bullet”), West Frisian kûgel (“bullet”).
