From Old Cornish kinethel, from Proto-Brythonic *kenedl, from Proto-Celtic *kenetlom (“race, people”), ultimately from Proto-Indo-European *ken- + *-tlom. Cognate with Breton kenel, Irish cineál, Scottish Gaelic cineal, and Welsh cenedl.
