From kepunan with epenthetic /m/, from Proto-Malayic *kApuhunan, from *puhun (stem, origin, to beg) +‎ *kA- -an. Cognate with Banjarese kapuhunan, Brunei Malay kapunan, and Jambi Malay kepunan.
