From kepunan with epenthetic /m/, from Proto-Malayic *kApuhunan, from *puhun (“stem, origin, to beg”) +‎ *kA- -an. Cognate with Banjarese kapuhunan, Brunei Malay kapunan, and Jambi Malay kepunan.
