Etymology

Borrowed from Javanese ꦏꦮꦸꦭ (kawula, “I”, literally “citizen, subject; servant”), from Old Javanese kawula (“servant, follower, subject”).

  1. (Brunei, Palace Malay) the first person personal pronoun for
    1. the Raja Isteri when addressing the Royal Family, Wazirs, Cheterias and Pengiran Pengiran Berteras;
    2. the Royal Family, Wazir-Wazir, Cheteria-Cheteria, Pengiran-Pengiran, Pehin-Pehin Manteri and the common people when addressing the Pehin-Pehin Manteri
    3. the common women when addressing the Cheteria-Cheteria and Pengiran-Pengiran;
    4. the Female Pengiran-Pengiran when addressing the Royal Family, Wazir-Wazir, Cheteria-Cheteria and Pengiran-Pengiran.
