From Proto-Athabaskan *qʼəš ~ *qʼəx̣šʷ (“alder”). Has been compared to Ket ӄыʼй (qɨˀj, “birch bark”). Compare also Ahtna kʼes

Perhaps this word is related to the root -KʼǪSH (“to be sour, be rancid (of color and oil)”).
