From Old Frisian *kōl, from Proto-West Germanic *kōl(ī), ultimately from Proto-Indo-European *gel-. Cognate with German kühl, English cool. Displaced or absorbed the descendant of West Germanic *kald, which would have yielded *küülj (cf. üülj).
