Etymology

Borrowed from German gewöhnlich. The open vowel (also in related Jewohnheet) was probably influenced by the native verb jewänne, jewähne corresponding to German gewöhnen, as e, ö, o in the older Rhenish pronunciation of Standard German were realized open or closed depending on whichever was closer to the respective dialect cognate. Gewöhnlich appears to be derived from gewöhnen, although this is in fact not the case (both being only remotely related). Moselle Franconian, which lacks front-rounded vowels, often adapted the vowel to that of the verb entirely.
