Inherited from Proto-Berber *a-məkli (dinner)[1], from Proto-Berber *ăkləʔ (to spend the day). Synchronically from kl (to spend the day).

Cognate with Kabyle imekli (meal during a journey, afternoon lunch), Awjila aməklìw (lunch), and Tarifit amecři (lunch).
