Etymology

Probably a modification influenced by Norwegian ild (“fire”) of the dialectal eimørje (“ember, glowing ash”), from Old Norse eimyrja (“glowing remains of a fire”), composed of Old Norse eimr + Old Norse yrja; see eim and -yrja (“fire”). Cognate evolution to Swedish askmörja, from Old Swedish askøria, asko øria (øria = yrja), intermixed with a descendant to eimyrja.
