Inherited from Proto-Berber *eɣəd (“ash”), from Proto-Berber *ăqqəd (“to burn”), from earlier *ăwqəd, ultimately from Proto-Afroasiatic *w-q-d (“to burn”). Synchronically from qqd (“to heat”).
