Maybe related to Māori hū “to bubble up [of water], to hiss”, compare with Hawaiian huahuaʻi reduplicate of huaʻi (cognate of huaki “to uncover”) deriving from hū similarly (This etymology is missing or incomplete. Please add to it, or discuss it at the Etymology scriptorium.)
