Etymology

From Middle High German haselnuz. The weak plural nuzzen is already attested in Middle High German and predominant in modern Upper German (Bavarian Nussn, Alemannic German Nusse). The singular in -a must have been backformed thence. Influence by Venetan noxa is imaginable, but the -a is not original here either.
