From Middle Cornish hwary, from Proto-Brythonic *gwarrɨɣ, *gwėrɨɣ, from Proto-Celtic *uɸorigeti (to delay), from *uɸo- (sub-) + *rigeti (to bind). Cognate with Breton c'hoari, Irish fuirigh (to wait), Manx fuirree (to wait), Scottish Gaelic fuirich (to stay), and Welsh chwarae.
