Etymology 1

From Proto-Vietic *-koːlʔ, perhaps from Proto-Mon-Khmer *kulʔ, a variant of *kəl( ) ~ *kəəlʔ (to support; to help). Compare Khmer កល់ (kɑl, to support from below), ខ្នល់ (khnɑl, prop; cushion).
