From Afrikaans fynbos (“fynbos”), from fyn (“fine”) (as in fine-textured, as opposed to trees) and bos (“bush or forest”).

1. (botany) Vegetation unique to the Cape Floral Kingdom, largely scrub, exceptionally biodiverse, including particularly large numbers of species of Proteaceae, Restionaceae, and Ericaceae.
