foreldri
Icelandic
Etymology
From Old Norse foreldri. Compound of for- (“previous”) + eldri (“older”, comparative of gamall).[1] Compare Dutch voorouder (“ancestor”).
Pronunciation
- IPA(key): /ˈfɔːrɛltrɪ/
Noun
foreldri n (genitive singular foreldris, nominative plural foreldri)
- a parent
Usage notes
- Usually the word is masculine in plural, see foreldrar, but neuter when referring to one parent without specifying which.[2] Rarely foreldri does occur in the plural, such as here in the context of the animal kingdom:
- 2014 June 30, Sigurður Ægisson, “Fálkamóðir með fjóra sísvanga unga”, in Morgunblaðið[2]:
- Fyrstu 30 dagana eða svo verða foreldrin að hluta bráðina niður fyrir þá.
- For the first 30 days or so, the parents have to chew the food up for them.
