From Old Norse foreldri. Compound of for- (“previous”) +‎ eldri (“older”, comparative of gamall).[1] Compare Dutch voorouder (“ancestor”).

Usage notes

  • Usually the word is masculine in plural, see foreldrar, but neuter when referring to one parent without specifying which.[2] Rarely foreldri does occur in the plural, such as here in the context of the animal kingdom:

    Fyrstu 30 dagana eða svo verða foreldrin að hluta bráðina niður fyrir þá.
