Literally, “to have a travelling pea”. Perhaps from the notion that a pea has moved to some wrong place in one's body (or at any rate sometimes thus interpreted). The Rheinisches Wörterbuch seems not to mention the phrase, but it does have several expressions playing on the fact that peas (like other legumes) can pass through the intestines undigested when not properly chewed. This fact may have been the outset of the idea of a pea “losing its way”. Otherwise compare also “The Princess and the Pea”.
