Etymology

From Proto-Brythonic *ėlestr, from Proto-Celtic *aliskstros. Compare Welsh and Breton elestr, Irish soilestar (from Old Irish seilisdeir), and Late Latin alestrāre.[1] Possibly cognate with Ancient Greek ἄλισμα (álisma).[2]
