Etymology

From Old Norse einka- and einka (“especially, exceptionally”, adverb). Probably a petrified genitive plural of an unattested noun Old Norse *eink f, from which there are also a petrified genitive singular einkar (“very”, adverb) and dative plural einkum (“especially”, adverb). This noun is possibly derived from Proto-Germanic *ainakaz (adjective). Compare ekkja f (“widow”), ekkill m (“widower”).[1]
