Etymology
Inherited from Latin currere (“run, flow”), an alteration of the older / regional form cure, influenced by verbs like merge. Likewise in most areas where cure is the dominant pronunciation, merge is altered to mere - by the same analogy. See also scurge. The Latin is from Proto-Italic *korzō, itself from Proto-Indo-European *ḱers- (“to run”).
