crane-line (plural crane-lines)

  1. (nautical) A line running from the spritsail topmast of a sailing ship to the middle of the forestay in order to steady the mast.
  2. (nautical) A small line joining the backstay of a sailing ship, or a small line used to prevent the lee backstays from chafing against the yards.
