clew-garnet (plural clew-garnets)

  1. (nautical) A rope attaching to the clew (lower corner) of a sail, used to furl it.
    • 1923, Charles Boardman Hawes, The Dark Frigate, Chapter 8:
      “Cast off the topsail sheets, clew garnets, leechlines and buntlines!” The order came thinly through the roar of the wind.
