Perhaps from Proto-Eastern Algonquian *šīwāp- (blue), from Proto-Algonquian *ši·wa·p-, compare Mohegan-Pequot siwôpisuw (he is blue), Cree sîpihko- (blue). Cognate with Munsee shiiwaapeekulush (bluebird).
