Etymology

From Proto-Vietic *coːŋʔ.

Semantically, compare  / (chēng), such as 撐拒 / 撑拒 with chống cự and 俯臥撐 / 俯卧撑 (fǔwòchēng) with chống đẩy.

Attested as Middle Vietnamese chóu᷃ in Dictionarium Annamiticum Lusitanum et Latinum (1651).[1]
