From Anglo-Norman canceler (to cross out with lines), from Old French canceler, from Latin cancellare (to cross out, cancel).

  1. To cross out or efface (writing, a record, etc.); to obliterate.
  2. To annul, revoke, or invalidate (a law, decree, debt, etc.).
  3. To destroy or put to an end.
