bimber
Polish
Etymology
Uncertain. First attested in 1937.[1]
- Bańkowski suggests the word has origins in prison slang with an original meaning of "stolen goods", particularly watches, in reference to a criminal caught with "corpus delicti", with a semantic shift to any illicit material, and ultimately to illegal alcohol.[2]
- Horbacz derives it from imbir with contamination with the word school slang word біба (biba, “drinking, libation”). Fałowski further compares it to Latin bibō.[3]
- Fałowski suggests a derivation from Lesser Polish bimb / bamb (“potato”) [3]
- Schuster-Šewc suggests a relation to bimbać.
