Etymology

First attested in the 1770-s by Søren Richart Hagerup, who has collected dialectal words in Surnadal, but, according to Arnold Dalen, many words in his collection are from further east. Hagerup gives also an alternative form Bætta. Compare Northern Gudbrandsdal dialect beta m, referring to any flatbrød sandwich. Related to bit (“a piece, a mouthful”).
