Etymology

From Old Swedish aflΔ«ΓΎa, equivalent to av- +β€Ž lida.[1] Cognate with Danish aflida (dated), Norwegian Nynorsk avliden, avlidd (both past participles, the nominative is not used in Norwegian), Gothic πŒ°π†πŒ»πŒ΄πŒΉπŒΈπŒ°πŒ½ (afleiΓΎan) (consists of the same prefix and stem word but does not seem to be related otherwise).
