Etymology

Uncertain. Perhaps from a noun *actus (“conducting business”) suffixed with the Paelignian derivative of Proto-Italic *-ikos. Perhaps ultimately from the root Proto-Indo-European *h₂eǵ-. If this theory is accepted, the term is related to Latin agō, from Proto-Italic *agō.
