Learned borrowing from Moroccan Amazigh ⴰⵙⴽⴽⵉⵍ (askkil, “letter”), from Kabyle asekkil (“letter”), from Tawellemmet and Tayert asǝkkul (“letter, character”), from Tawellemmet ǝskel (“to be vocalized, to be punctuated”), ultimately from Arabic شَكَلَ (šakala, “to vocalize”).
