Etymology

The translative singular of now archaic anne (gift). Compare Estonian andeks, Ingrian anteeks (in antaa anteeks), Karelian andiekši, Votic antõssi; at least some of these may be borrowed from Finnish, according to SSA.[1] For the semantic connection between giving and apologizing, compare also the formation of English forgive.
