From Proto-East Cushitic *ʔaabb-, the vocative of *ʔabb- (whence abbaan (“protector”)), from Proto-Afroasiatic *ʔab- (“father”), ultimately a Lallwort. Compare with Proto-Semitic *ʔabw- (“father”), Proto-Berber *abba, Egyptian ꜣbwt.
