From Proto-Nuristani, either a borrowing from a descendant of Sanskrit अक्षि (ákṣi) + plural *-āni or inherited from Proto-Indo-Iranian *Hačan-, from Proto-Indo-European *h₃ekʷen-, from *h₃ókʷs.[1]
