Zukunftsmusik

Zukunft +‎ -s- +‎ Musik, “music of the future”. Initially coined as term of abuse for Richard Wagner's music by Ludwig Bischoff in the 1850s.^[1], the original sense being "music that will only find appreciation in the future".

As a metaphor for non-musical plans and ideas, it occurs as early as the 1890s.

Zukunftsmusik f (genitive Zukunftsmusik, no plural)

1. pipe dream, pie in the sky (unrealistic aspiration or vision of the future, unlikely to come about in the foreseeable future)

   Eine Reise zum Mars ist nach wie vor Zukunftsmusik.

   A journey to Mars is still a pipe dream.
