Etymology

From xweda, merging with its oblique form "xwedayî" (compare similarly dinyayê > dinê, zavayî > zavê). Akin to xwedan (“lord; owner”) and probably xwedî, Central Kurdish خوا (xwa) and Persian خدا.

Usage notes

  • This form of the word cannot get a suffix attached other than the vocative ("xwedêo") and it stays the same in the oblique case. To attach a suffix the form xweda is to be used ("xwedayê, xwedayan" etc.). However, in the dialects where final -ê- sounds aren't shifted into -î- after having a long wovel attached to them (eg. rê with -an not becoming riyan but instead rêan), saying xwedê ê ("god of") is possible.
  • The form xwedê refers more to one's own God and is more casual, while xweda is the word for any god and may yield religious connotations when used for one's own God.
