Etymology

From whaka- (causative prefix) +‎ tāne (man), literally “to become a man”. In order to save her waka, Mātaatua, which had landed here, Wairaka said "Ka whakatāne au i ahau" (literally “I will make myself a man”) and paddled it to safety.
