   Dieser Tritt ins Fettnäpfchen war natürlich Wasser auf die Mühlen ihrer Kritiker.

   This fauxpas was grist to the mill for her critics, of course.

• The definite article can be replaced with a possessive determiner or prepositioned genitive (Wasser auf meine Mühlen etc.).
• Singular Mühle and plural Mühlen may be used depending on the number of groups or individuals implied, but the plural is now preferred in all contexts.^[1]
