Etymology
Varroa + English destructor. Coined by D. L. Anderson & J. W. H. Trueman in 2000, who showed that this species was distinct from Varroa jacobsoni. From being a destructive ectoparasite of European honey bees, able to wipe out colonies; a mite of the genus Varroa.
