Etymology

From English Uruguay (“South American river”) +‎ -a f, named as such due to this species being found in the River Uruguay. Coined by British surgeon, geologist, paleontologist, zoologist and botanist Henry John Carter in 1881. The term was coined to separate the species Uruguaya corallioides (then Spongilla corallioides) from the genus Spongilla.
