Etymology

The sense is that of French tiroir (“drawer”), whereas the form appears to be that of tirant (“pull cord, drawstring”). The two words may have been confused, or tirant may have had the sense “drawer” in a certain dialect. (Another, more speculative possibility is that at a time when Luxembourgish still had alveolar [r], the French uvular [ʁ] might have been misheard as [ŋ] in final position.)
