Etymology

Probably inherited from Late Middle High German *tasse (attested as diminutive tesschichyn, mid-15th c.), from Middle French tasse (14th c.). The lengthening of -a- is regular in this position. While it could alternatively reflect the Modern French /ɑː/-vowel, the same lengthening is also found in some German dialects of Central Franconian, where such influence is unlikely.
