Compare Latvian Salaca. Multiple theories for the name exist: that it derives from Livonian *saletsa (“salty river”) (no such word is attested in Livonian, however), that it derives from dialectal salai (“biting, pungent”) (possibly from Proto-Finnic *salvadak), connection with the Lithuanian river name Salantas (however, it is often connected with the following), and connection with Lithuanian sálti (“to flow”)^[1] (however, Jakob considers this to be a likely ghost word^[2]).
