Etymology

Inherited from Ottoman Turkish صیغه‌جق (sığacık). According to Nishanyan, the placename could derive from Ancient Greek σιγαλεός (sigaleós, silent, still), in reference to its naturally protected harbour. The site of the ancient city of Τέως (Téōs) is located nearby.
