Unknown; suggested to be from earlier *klaiwʀā, in which the sequence *-wʀ- developed into *-bʀ-, syncopated from an original z-stem *klaiw ~ *klaiwiʀi[1],[2] whence a-stem *klaiw, perhaps of substrate origin[3]. Possibly related to *hlaibaz.
