Etymology

Possibly borrowed from Indo-Iranian; compare Sanskrit धारा (dhā́rā),^[1] or alternatively Old Persian 𐎫𐎡𐎥𐎼 (t-i-g-r /⁠tigraʰ⁠/, “sharp”).^[2]

Securely reconstructed for Finno-Permic. Whether Hungarian tőr also belongs here is disputed, as the vowel does not match.
