Nişanyan derives from *bēr- +‎ *-gerü. [1] Clauson derives from *ber +‎ *-rü[2] Erdal suggests a relation with *bū and *bẹ[3]

Clauson also considers the possibility with an *-ẹ- vowel, but he suggests the evidence for an *-ẹ- vowel is not conclusive. [2]
